On July 15, Marvel made the Internet-exploding announcement that, come fall of 2014, a woman would be Thor.
“This is not She-Thor,” writer Jason Aaron said in a press release. “This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
Marvel (via “The View”) also released some concept art for the female God of Thunder, who will take over the hammer come October — in a comic book. We repeat: In a comic book. Nobody, male or female, is taking over for Chris Hemsworth and his remarkable biceps in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this time.
Still, it’s understandable why the Internet (specifically Twitter, Tumblr, and the malicious world of comment boards) quickly started throwing out names of actors they’d like to see take on the role. Many were mentioned, but these are the names you guys really want added to the short list:
Gwendoline Christie
Unsurprisingly, the six foot three inch Christie, who currently plays Brienne of Tarth in “Game of Thrones” and will soon appear in “Star Wars: Episode VII,” was the name on everyone’s mind when this new iteration of Thor was announced. Not only because she’s a fabulous actress, but because physically, she obviously looks very much the part.
Katee Sackhoff
“Avengers” director himself Joss Whedon threw out a pic of “Battlestar Galactica” alum Katee Sackhoff, and Twitter seemed to really, really enjoy it. However, we’re not quite sure if he was making a casting suggestion, referencing the fact that her iconic “BSG” character was initially played by a man, or a mix of both. Either way, consider us in.
Jennifer Lawrence
This Nikola-Nickart creation quickly made the rounds, because Lawrence is a wonderfully unstoppable she-beast who is on the short list for everything, including the starring role in the Grumpy Cat biopic and the post-Affleck Batman.
Emily Blunt
Anyone who saw the tragically under-seen “Edge of Tomorrow” should understand why Blunt’s name seems to be a popular choice.
Benedict Cumberbatch
Okay, so he’s not a lady, but it’s pretty safe to assume that the Internet wants Benedict Cumberbath to play all the roles. ALL THE ROLES.
