Scientists have said killer viruses could fall from space at any time[GETTY]
Killer germs like the AIDS-causing HIV, the lethal Ebola and small pox either came from or were supercharged by particles brought to Earth on comets, they said.
They warned the human race faces a catastrophic disease pandemic and even EXTINCTION unless organisms constantly raining down onto our planet are closely monitored.
Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe, of the Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology, said a super-virulent virus was most likely responsible for killing the dinosaurs.
He said: “Over history and evolution lethal viruses have suddenly appeared and disappeared, there is no way they could have originated from Earth.
“What is more plausible is they have entered the atmosphere having been carried by comets before having devastating impacts.
“It is possible that a virus could arrive on Earth and trigger a devastating pandemic or even wipe out humanity, this is the scale of what we think we are dealing with.

“This has already happened during the evolutionary process, it is what is likely to have happened to the dinosaurs.
“We have evidence that bacteria and other organisms exist in space and rain down onto Earth, we believe the same is true of viruses.”
He said the deadly HIV virus, discovered just 30 years ago having come apparently from nowhere, could be extra-terrestrial in origin.
The virus which causes AIDS either fell as a complete entity or already existed in a dormant state on Earth before being supercharged by strands of RNA, similar to DNA, from outer space, he said.
He said: “This virus has been detected in primates, but that is no proof that it came from monkeys.
“One likely explanation is that there could have been a virus which was around for a long time and suddenly changed because it picked up a piece of RNA from outer space which suddenly made it virulent.
“The other explanation is that it came as a complete unit, more research is needed to see what happened but it is vital to prevent an extinction-level catastrophe.
“What is more worrying is that these viruses could become even stronger and more dangerous, the consequences would be absolutely devastating.”
Scientists have recently isolated tiny living organisms in the Earth’s stratosphere which they say are proof of life in space.
Plankton like ‘diatoms’ have also been discovered on the surface of the International Space Station (ISS) amid claims there is no way they could have blown up from Earth.
Professor Milton Wainwright, part of a team of scientists from the University of Sheffield and the University of Buckingham Centre for Astrobiology, sent balloons 27km into the sky to collect particles from space.
He claimed minuscule algae-like organisms which were discovered prove there is an abundance of life
“raining on Earth” from space.
He said: “It is an amazing discovery and the evidence is overwhelming that these organisms have originated from outer space.
“Diatoms are coming in from space all the time, raining down on Earth, these findings are about to blow all theories of biology and evolution out of the water, they will have to start re-writing text books.”
Professor Wickramasinghe said more dangerous organisms could be lurking in space ready to strike Earth at any time.
He said biological material is being transported around the universe on comets and is constantly raining down on our planet.
He said: “There is no way we can explain the evolution of life on Earth without accepting there is an influence from elsewhere in space.
“If you look at the sheer number of viruses being found all the time it is simply mind-blowing.
“A single drop of sea water contains around 10 million viral particles, viruses overwhelmingly dominate life on Earth and these are constantly taking up bits of genetic information which affect evolution.
“If you look at small pox, it showed a familiar pattern of suddenly appearing and becoming very dangerous, the same thing could happen again.”
He said a virus capable of killing off the human race once detected in the stratosphere would take about two years to reach Earth.
He said: “This is why it is essential to constantly monitor what is coming into our atmosphere, otherwise the consequences will be devastating.
“These organisms are carried on comets which break up before millions of tiny particles fall through the sky.
“It is entirely possible that something capable of altering the course of evolution could happen, a deadly virus could arrive from outer space, wiping out the whole of the human race.”
